On a school night in New York City, a mother helps her daughter appear older to spend time together at a cocktail lounge leading to a night of revealing truths and reflection

We Do Our Best is inspired by an actual special night from my senior year of high school. I remember feeling nervous, but sophisticated with these bartenders as our captive audience. When my mom looked at me like I was her best friend, it suddenly struck me this is her first time doing life too.

I wrote this because I want to see a coming-of-age story about a mom and daughter that defies the typical narrative of conflict for nuanced tenderness and mutual self-discovery. I want to represent the precociousness of growing up in New York City, and a mom who supports this while also longing for her daughter to need her.

I hope the audience feels the compassion that grows between these two characters, and that it sparks memories of their own pivotal moments. A reminder that none of us have done this before, and all we can do is our best.
